In monatlichen Abst\u00e4nden stellen wir an dieser Stelle interessante Artikel der letzten Zeit vor, die im Internet frei zug\u00e4nglich sind. Diesmal sind es Artikel von Mario Vargas Llosa zur Massenkultur, von Roger Scruton zur \u00bbculture of fakes\u00ab und von Jed Perl zum \u203aWarhol-Fluch\u2039.<\/p>\n
In den letzten Wochen gab es eine ganze Reihe von Artikeln konservativer Autoren zur Popkultur. Erstaunlicherweise trifft man auf sie zumeist nicht mehr im alten Europa. In Deutschland wird das Genre kaum noch bedient; die tonangebende deutsche Intellektuellenszene hat sich von ihm augenscheinlich verabschiedet. So viel Gr\u00fcndlichkeit und Opportunismus muss nun auch nicht wieder sein. Vielleicht bietet die (Re-)Lekt\u00fcre der bildungsb\u00fcrgerlichen Argumente einige Anregungen. Immerhin beachtlich ist bei ihnen, dass sie nicht gegen Pappkameraden wie Dieter Bohlen leichte Siege erzielen, sondern sich gegen inzwischen hoch respektable K\u00fcnstler richten:<\/p>\n
Der Engl\u00e4nder Roger Scruton tritt im \u00bbAeon Magazine\u00ab gegen Warhol, Damien Hirst und Philip Glass an. Die heutige Maxime des Kunstbetriebs laute: \u00bbThe worst thing is to be unwittingly guilty of producing kitsch; far better to produce kitsch deliberately, for then it is not kitsch at all but a kind of sophisticated parody.\u00ab Scruton h\u00e4lt die Zitierung und Ironisierung aber f\u00fcr eine genauso schlimme Form des Kitsches. Mal wieder interessant zu sehen, wie stark hier die konservativen mit den ihnen sonst feindlich gesonnenen links-antikapitalistischen Urteilen \u00fcbereinstimmen: \u00bbPublic galleries and big collections fill with the pre-digested clutter of modern life. Such art eschews subtlety, allusion and implication, and in place of imagined ideals in gilded frames it offers real junk in quotation marks. It is indistinguishable in the end from advertising \u2014 with the sole qualification that it has no product to sell except itself.\u00ab (\u00bbThe Great Swindle\u00ab<\/a>)<\/p>\n Jed Perl bef\u00fcrchtet im amerikanischen \u00bbNew Republic\u00ab gleicherma\u00dfen, dass die \u00bbnew high-plus-pop synergy\u00ab sich durchgesetzt habe, wie man am heutigen Ruhm Warhols sehen m\u00fcsse. \u00bbThe argument is that we are all soulless in the Warhol way, all victims of cultural anesthesia. And if you question these assumptions or attempt to change the conversation, you will be told that you have done nothing of the kind. If we are all Warholians, then even our distaste for Warhol is a Warholian act. The attitude suggests a certain philosophic finality, which explains why so many intellectuals are fascinated by the phenomenon.\u00ab (\u00bbThe Curse of Warholism<\/a>\u00ab)<\/p>\n In einem Gespr\u00e4ch, \u00fcbermittelt von \u00bbEurozine\u00ab, streitet auch Perus Nobelpreistr\u00e4ger Vargas-Llosa dagegen, obwohl er ebenfalls meint, bereits verloren zu haben: \u00bbThe freedom the visual arts have acquired consists in the fact that everything can be art and that nothing is; that all art can be beautiful or ugly, but there is no way of distinguishing the two.\u00ab Wie auch Scruton leidet er unter der Kultur, die jener Kapitalismus hervorgebracht hat, den sie \u00fcber Jahrzehnte gegen die Linken verteidigt haben: \u00bbModern industrial society, market society, the society of advanced countries has improved the living conditions of individual human beings enormously. But in no way has it brought the happiness that people seek as their ultimate destiny. What is lacking is precisely what goes by the name of a \u203arich spiritual life\u2039.\u00ab (\u00bb\u203aProust Is Important for Everyone\u2039<\/a>\u00ab)<\/p>\n Wenn man bedenkt, dass Winfried Kretschmann in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg Ministerpr\u00e4sident werden konnte, m\u00fcsste doch in Deutschland ein konservativer Bildungsb\u00fcrger wider den kapitalistischen, konsumistischen Avant-Pop bzw. die \u00bbnew high-plus-pop synergy\u00ab mit mehr begr\u00fcndetem Optimismus an die kritische Sache herangehen. Aber wahrscheinlich gibt es hier gar keine Konservativen im Kulturbereich mehr.
