SLR Blog: Healthy Eating Habits | Student Survival Tips

Getting used to and maintaining healthy eating habits can be very challenging. Here are some tips for your everyday life:

  • There is no “one-size-fits-all”. Everybody processes food differently and has a different taste. You don’t need to stick to guidelines perfectly, keep it maintainable so you can benefit in the long run. Just keep these recommendations in mind:
    1. Try to keep your salt consumption to a maximum of 6g per day.
    2. Moderate your intake of sugar and saturated fats.
    3. Choose fresh, whole foods over preprocessed options.
    4. Incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into your diet.
    5. Opt for plant-based fats, such as vegetable oil or avocados.
    6. Choose whole grain products like whole wheat pasta or bread to help you feel fuller for longer.
    7. Aim to drink about 1.5 liters of water or unsweetened tea each day.
    8. Enjoy alcohol in moderation, if at all.
  • Meal prep & plan. Days at university can be very exhausting. Cook in advance to have a quick but fresh dinner or plan meals for the week, so you know what you have time for, and you have everything already at home.
  • Buy fresh food. Visit your local market, like the “Kornmarkt” in Siegen city or in Siegen-Weidenau at “Hauptmarkt” on Wednesdays and Saturdays for fresh and regional food. Also keep an eye out for weekly changing sales in supermarkets to buy on a budget.
  • Check out other Recipes and meal plans of others at the SLR. Take a look at the folder of the Student Living Room to gather inspiration for your meals this week. You can simply add your own favorite recipes and plans into the folder.

For further tips and information check out the folder at the student living room on things like the “Nutri-score” on German products or check out the websites below.

Be safe and take care of you!
