24.03. Preparing your Documents for Job Search II: How to write a Cover Letter | FIT: Soft Skills & Employability

In this interactive workshop, international students learned how to craft a professional and compelling cover letter tailored to the German job market. Whether applying for an internship, working student position, thesis opportunity, or entry-level job in Germany, participants gained valuable insights into best practices for structuring and personalizing their applications.

Key Learnings from the Workshop

Many students were surprised to learn that a cover letter is not just a detailed version of their CV. Instead, it serves as a persuasive argument for why they should be hired. The focus lies on presenting compelling reasons for the employer, highlighting not only achievements but also key factors such as personality, learning experiences, practical skills, motivation, and alignment with the job and company values.

Other key takeaways included:

🔹 Customization is crucial – A generic cover letter won’t stand out. Tailoring it to the specific company and position significantly increases the chances of success.

🔹 More than just skills – Companies look for cultural fit, adaptability, and motivation, not just qualifications and experience.

🔹 Professional yet personal tone – The right balance between professionalism and authenticity can make a lasting impression.

🔹 Quality over quantity – A strong, well-written one-page cover letter is far more effective than a lengthy, unfocused text.

Mastering these aspects can make a significant difference in securing internships, working student roles, or entry-level positions in Germany! 🚀
