24.03. Preparing your Documents for Job Search II: How to write a Cover Letter | FIT: Soft Skills & Employability

In this interactive workshop, international students learned how to craft a professional and compelling cover letter tailored to the German job market. Whether applying for an internship, working student position, thesis opportunity, or entry-level job in Germany, participants gained valuable insights into best practices for structuring and personalizing their applications.

Key Learnings from the Workshop

Many students were surprised to learn that a cover letter is not just a detailed version of their CV. Instead, it serves as a persuasive argument for why they should be hired. The focus lies on presenting compelling reasons for the employer, highlighting not only achievements but also key factors such as personality, learning experiences, practical skills, motivation, and alignment with the job and company values.

Other key takeaways included:

🔹 Customization is crucial – A generic cover letter won’t stand out. Tailoring it to the specific company and position significantly increases the chances of success.

🔹 More than just skills – Companies look for cultural fit, adaptability, and motivation, not just qualifications and experience.

🔹 Professional yet personal tone – The right balance between professionalism and authenticity can make a lasting impression.

🔹 Quality over quantity – A strong, well-written one-page cover letter is far more effective than a lengthy, unfocused text.

Mastering these aspects can make a significant difference in securing internships, working student roles, or entry-level positions in Germany! 🚀

29.11.24 Start your Career in Germany! | FIT: Soft Skills & Employability

How International Students Can Prepare for Their Career Journey

On November 29, 2024, the International Office and the Alumni Association of the University of Siegen hosted Start Your Career in Germany! —a dynamic and practical event tailored to international students eager to navigate the German job market successfully.

The program kicked off with a free networking lunch, offering students the chance to connect with peers and alumni in a relaxed environment. This was followed by an interactive World Café, where small, focused discussions were led by experienced alumni who had firsthand insights into the German job market.

During the sessions, participants delved into crucial topics such as crafting effective applications, excelling in interviews, and strategies for self-marketing. The guidance provided by HR experts and former international students was invaluable, bridging the gap between academic preparation and real-world professional expectations.

A key highlight was the opportunity to gain insider perspectives from alumni who had successfully transitioned from university to employment in Germany. Their stories underscored the importance of persistence, adaptability, and networking. Students left not only with practical tips but also with a deeper understanding of the cultural nuances and expectations of the German workplace.

This event was more than just a workshop—it was a platform for empowerment, connection, and preparation for the challenges ahead. With coffee, snacks, and an informal atmosphere, Start Your Career in Germany! truly exemplified how the University of Siegen supports its international students in shaping their future.

See what your fellow students say:

"The alumni event was such a great experience! It was amazing to meet alumni who are doing so well in their careers and were so open to sharing advice and suggestions. Their guidance really helped me see new possibilities for my own path. I would definitely recommend attending, it’s a great way to learn and get inspired!" - Sairaj

Starting from 20.11.2024: Opening Day of the Student Living Room | FIT: Well-Being & Social Integration

On November 20th, we officially opened the Student Living Room (SLR)! Students came to visit, meet their hosts, and get a first look at this new space designed just for them. The atmosphere was welcoming and warm, with everyone eager to connect and share their thoughts. It was an opportunity for students to not only familiarize themselves with the room but also to participate in creating the community they want to see in the space.

Throughout the event, we played a variety of board games, which sparked laughter and friendly competition. The SLR hosts planned some activities for the event, like mandala coloring, a meditation and an art exercise.  This created a relaxed and fun environment, encouraging students to exchange stories and experiences.

One of the key aspects of the event was to gather feedback from the students. We wanted to know what they would like to see in the Student Living Room and how it could best serve their needs. To make this process interactive, students were invited to write down their wishes and suggestions. Their input is essential to ensure that the space evolves into a place where everyone feels comfortable and heard.

As a special surprise, we presented the students with an Advent Calendar filled with tea, encouraging them to take time for Self-care. It’s a little gift to help them unwind and practice mindfulness during the busy weeks leading up to Christmas. We hope the tea calendar serves as a reminder to pause and enjoy a moment of peace amidst their hectic schedules.

We look forward to seeing how the Student Living Room will grow with the students’ input and continue to be a place of connection, relaxation, and creativity.

Come by, we can’t wait to see you here!
